Granted, shares of Southwest Airlines (LUV) fell 0.1% to $41.85 in early afternoon market action. But Delta Air Lines (DAL), United Continental Holdings (UAL), American Airlines Group (AAL) and Spirit Airlines (SAVE) and JetBlue Airways (JBLU) rose 0.35%, 0.2%, 1.78%, 0.3% and 0.48% respectively.

With an upscale product on new Airbus narrow body aircraft, VA has routinely generated higher average fares and higher RASM on both long haul and short haul extremely competitive routes vs. legacy and traditional low cost carrier. Virgin has consistently generated higher average fares and higher revenue per mile than American Airlines, Delta Air Lines (DAL), and United Airlines (UAL) on transcontinental routes such as JFK to LAX and JFK to SFO [...] During 4Q13, in the LAX to JFK market, Virgin America generated an average fare of $284, $17 above the second highest fare of $267 for American and $39 above the average fare for all carriers in this market. In 2Q14, the last period for which Department of Transportation data is available, American Airlines surpassed Virgin in terms of both average fare and RASM. This was the result of AAL's switching to new smaller aircraft, thus cutting its capacity in the LAX to JFK market by approximately 18%. The reduction effe ctively reduced the number of discounted seats offered by American, squeezing the 18% lowest fare paying passengers off the AAL flights and thus driving the average AAL fare higher. We do not believe there was a material change in the relative performance of Virgin versus American in the top three-fourths of the fare paying passengers.

Airbus (EADSY) and Boeing's (BA) battle for supremacy in the aviation market is never ending. In one such similar event, European plane maker Airbus bagged a crucial order from Delta Air Lines (DAL) for A330neo and A350 which is valued at $14.3 billion at list price, which does not account for the discount offered by the plane maker. This is an essential deal for the player as Boeing dominates the wide-body market and this order would give Airbus a boost.

One of the things that sets Netflix (NFLX) apart is its decision to offer entire seasons of original content at once. When the second season of "House of Cards" becomes available on Valentine's Day, fans of the award-winning political drama will be able to watch the entire season in one sitting if they so choose. Netflix calls it binge viewing, and it's a far cry from the traditional release platform where networks offer episodes in weekly installments with lulls for reruns along the way. Netflix has championed this approach since it broke into the market of offering first-run serialized dramas two years ago with the introduction of "Lilyhammer." At the time it was unconventional, but now that Netflix has followed suit with "House of Cards," "Orange is the New Black" and the "Arrested Development" revival it is something that viewers have come to expect out of the leading video service. Binge viewing is the new normal, but that doesn't mean that catering to it is the right approach. Streaming Against the Current It's been two years since Netflix decided to cater to binge viewers, but its rivals don't seem particularly ready to play along. Amazon.com (AMZN) broke into original programming by letting its users vote on several pilots. The first two shows to make the cut -- "Alpha House" and "Betas" -- made their season debuts in November. As Netflix's closest rival in the streaming business, the market was naturally going to keep an eye on how the leading online retailer would dispense the episodes. Would it follow Netflix or would it give a nod to traditional release schedules? Amazon chose to carve its own path. When "Alpha House" and "Betas" debuted, it made the first three episodes of each available immediately. However, the balance of the seasons were dispensed in weekly doses. Best European Stocks To Invest In 2015

The following interview is from theSprott Money Weekly Wrap-up, recorded on January 24, 2013, and edited for clarity. In this week round-up, Geoffrey Rutherford from Sprott Money Ltd. interviews Sprott Inc. Chairman Eric Sprott.

How are you doing today, Eric?

I doing well; wee had a pretty good week here so far. Lots of things are going on in precious metals.

Seems to be; so let get started with it. First let talk about the decline of the stock market, Eric. What are your thoughts on that?

Sure. Well, there been a lot of pressure in emerging markets here on both the currencies and the stock markets. I think it a fear of sort of unwinding or having the taper take place. So wee had big devaluations in Argentina, and currencies such as the Rand, Thai baht, many emerging countries their currencies are very weak here. We can talk about devaluations here. Every time I see the word evaluation,I think, well, obviously people could have protected themselves by owning precious metals in those particular countries. So wee had a lot of difficulty on the emerging markets side, which I think will spill over into the developed markets. Wee seen a lot of pressure on European equities, on US equities. My own conclusion is that there is very little recovery going on in any country. The ropsof too much debt are almost insurmountable. The consumer tapped out, and I think that they are finally realizing that these continued promises of economic recovery are not going to happen.

Total has indicated that its engineers will need to evaluate the prospects before any decision is made on payments. In the month of March, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission announced that all electricity generation that was added to the system during the month came from solar energy. While this month may have been anaberration, the first quarter of 2013 saw 83% of all generation capacity that was added come from either solar or wind power. In this video, Fool.com contributor Tyler Crowe shows how some recent advancements in technology and manufacturing from industry leaders like First Solar (NASDAQ: FSLR  ) have made this possible.

    The Energy Strategist Portfolio Update

    First Solar Goes Supernova

Home runs don’t come easily in this business, in part because of the natural temptation to lock in quick gains. This strategy for coping with good fortune, known in scholarly work as dispositio! n bias, can be quite costly, because it rids portfolios of the best-performing, highest-momentum stocks soon after their merits have become more apparent. It’s a great way to turn home runs into doubles.

Don’t make that mistake with First Solar (Nasdaq: FSLR) following the stock’s 18 percent rally Friday in the aftermath of an uncommonly strong earnings report. With today’s 4 percent follow-through, shares are up 67 percent since we recommended purchase on Aug. 28.

The headline numbers included a 50 percent year-over-year revenue jump accompanied by a near-doubling of net earnings to $1.94 per share, while the pro-forma $2.28 per share more than doubled Wall Street’s consensus. First Solar has consistent ly warned that its results will be lumpy, and this time the lumps proved sweet thanks to the disposal of some projects as well as the first infusion of recognized revenue from a big solar project under construction in California’s Riverside county.

One might further quibble that an annual review lowering the estimated costs of First Solar’s program for recycling obsolete panels from its projects boosted operating earnings by $49 million, or 24 percent.

But the numbers really worth paying attention to are those that prompted us to add the stock to the Growth Portfolio in the first place. These start with First Solar’s rapid marginal improvement in the conversion efficiency ratio of the cadmium-telluride film coating its panels, which gives the share of the available energy they are able to convert into usable power. The ratio reached 13.3 percent by the last quarter’s end, up from 13 percent three months earlier a
  • [By Dan Caplinger]

First Solar (NASDAQ: FSLR  ) , short position: 30.4% of float and 21% of outstanding shares
The solar industry has been hit hard by overcapacity, but First Solar shocked bears earlier this month with guidance on sales and earnings that was far above what indu! stry anal! ysts were expecting. Moreover, its purchase of TetraSun will help First Solar boost the efficiency of its solar modules, an area in which the company has long lagged some of its competitors. Short-sellers are feeling the squeeze as a result of much higher share prices recently, although the stock still trades well below its levels from early 2011. It'll be interesting to see whether they'll give in and cover their positions in light of the news.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Finally, earnings continue to have big impacts not only on individual stocks but on entire industries. First Solar's (NASDAQ: FSLR  ) report last night has sent the shares for a loop: They're dropping 9% after the company missed earnings estimates. Yet the company didn't pull back from its more optimistic assessment of its future as it continues efforts to bolster its already impressive backlog of solar projects. The stock drop brings two potential opportunities. If you think First Solar's long-term prospects will stay in line with its management's projections, then today's drop is a bargain opportunity. Meanwhile, if you think the reason for First Solar's drop is tied only to the company specifically, then rival SunPower (NASDAQ: SPWR  ) , which is the efficiency leader in the U.S. solar market and which has fallen almost 4% in concert with First Solar today, could be the better buy.

Top 5 Financial Companies To Watch In Right Now

ArcelorMittal (MT) released better-than-expected first quarter results. The key reason behind the company good performance was the closure of mills in Europe. However, the company has been struggling for two years, which is evident from the falling stock price and its inability to post solid financials. But, now it seems that ArcelorMittal is improving.

The company might be a good performer in the future on the back of its strategic moves. However, there are some other important points on the back of which ArcelorMittal might see some trouble.

Analyzing the results

In the recently reported quarter, ArcelorMittal reported a good 9% improvement in year-over-year EBITDA. This was a result of the improving U.S. and European economies and the growing demand for steel. ArcelorMittal posted a profit of $52 million, which is better than a $780 million loss in the same quarter a year ago. However, the steel company expects iron ore prices to remain low in the coming months. This is bad news for the company, and it will be tough for it to maintain a good profit margin.

Imperial Holdings, Inc., through its subsidiaries, operates as a specialty finance company in the United States. The company operates in two business segments: Life Finance and Structured Settlements. The Life Finance segment comprises life settlements and finance loan businesses. The Structured Settlement segment purchases structured settlements at a discounted rate and sells such assets to third parties. This segment primarily markets its products through the Internet and television. Imperial Holdings, Inc. was founded in 2006 and is based in Boca Raton, Florida.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Whopper Investments]

Note: This is my response to the recent short case on Imperial Finance (IFT). Obviously, all humans are fallible, and I'm sure someone can find just as much to argue with my long case as I found to argue with his short case. Please read for yourself, do your own research, and make your own decision. I am long IFT and plan on fully participating in the rights offering.

  • [By DCResearch]

Imperial Holdings (IFT) fits the bill for all of those traits and investors today can buy Imperial Holdings for less than 0.75x book value. Upside to book value, an obvious valuation factor for most financial companies, would result in a greater than 40% return for a patient investor. I believe that this is far below the fair value for IFT book of life settlements, and upside is in excess of $13 per share.

The investment objective of US12OF is for the daily changes in percentage terms of its units per unit net asset value (NAV) to reflect the daily changes in percentage terms of the spot price of light, sweet crude oil delivered to Cushing, Oklahoma, as measured by the changes in the average of the prices of 12 futures contracts for light, sweet crude oil traded on the New York Mercantile Exchange (the NYMEX) consisting of the near month contract to expire and the contracts for 11 months, for a total of 12 consecutive months contracts, except when the near month contract is within two weeks of expiration, in which case it is measured by the futures contract that is the next month contract to expire and the contracts for 11 consecutive months (the Benchmark Oil Futures Contracts). For convenience and unless otherwise specified, Oil Futures Contracts and Other Oil-Related Investments collectively are referred to! as oil Interests.

US12OF invests in Oil Interests to the fullest extent possible without being leveraged or unable to satisfy its current or potential margin or collateral obligations with respect to its investments in Oil Futures Contracts and Other Oil-Related Investments. US12OF investments in short-term obligations of the United States of two years or less (Treasuries), cash and/or cash equivalents.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Another choice is to use ETFs with a longer-term futures strategy. The United States 12-Month Oil Fund (NYSEMKT: USL  ) holds equal positions in each of the next 12 futures contracts. That reduces the positive impact of near-term backwardation, but it gives you more exposure to the heavier backwardation that exists further into the future.

Shares of Heartland Express (HTLD) rose today despite being cut by Stifel Nicolaus for valuation reasons.

    Bloomberg News

Shares of Heartland Express have gained 50% this year, trumping the 38% rise in Con-Way (CNW) and the 29% advance in J.B. Hunt Transport Services (JBHT) but lagging Old Dominion Freight Lines (ODFL) and Swift Transportation (SWFT).

That big gain was enough for Stifel’s John Larkin say no mas and cut his rating on Heartland Express. They explain why:

Downgrading from Buy to Hold as the company’s shares appear fully and fairly valued. In fact, shares have recently traded through our 12-month fair value estimate of $19 (or 16.0x our 2015 EPS estimate of $1.15 plus ~$0.68 per share NPV of future cash tax benefits).

Rating change is primarily valuation based as well as from our view that most transportation equities are trading ahead of the still mediocre underlying freight market fundamentals.

BB&T’s Thomas Albrecht and team, who upgraded Heartland Express to Buy from Hold yesterday, explain why they think the stock will do just fine regardless of the economy:

Heartland is an intriguing play upon both a slow-growth eco! nomy and ! a rapidly growing one (along with tight capacity). Many carriers are only able to thrive in the latter environment. With HTLD we believe that even in a sluggish economy it has a self-generating EPS story through the integration and growth of Gordon. Q3’13, a very difficult quarter for TL carriers, saw HTLD post a 79.3% OR versus 83.3%.

The timing of the Gordon deal seems ideal, similar to the Great Coastal acquisition in mid-2002. Back then the TL market was stabilizing, but had yet to really take off, which occurred in the back half of 2003. Those 4-5 quarters allowed HTLD to assess customers, integrate operations, consolidate facilities and get ready for the next cycle. By the time that occurred HTLD was ready to take advantage of the capacity

Hot Consumer Service Companies To Watch For 2015

Source: Honda Motor Corp.Honda Motor Corp. (NYSE: HMC) plans to recall more than 886,000 Odyssey minivans manufactured in the company Alabama plant between 2005 and 2010.

The cause of the recall is a defective part of the Odyssey fuel pump that may crack and allow gasoline to leak onto the engine, increasing the risk of a fire, according to documents released Saturday by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Honda believes that the cracks may be due to high temperatures and acids that accumulate on the fuel pump over time. To date no fires or injuries have been reported as a result of the defect.

Honda first noticed that there may be a problem with the fuel pumps in October 2012 and began an investigation that led to the recall. In its filing with the NHTSA, the company said that it has received 187 warranty claims due to the faulty fuel pump.

Hot Transportation Companies To Invest In 2015

The role of the barge can't be underestimated. Barge receipts increased more than two percentage points year over year, and this is a great place for investors to look for opportunity. Companies with maritime resources benefit from this trend, as well as growth in exports. Three such companies that are worth a look are:

Kirby Corporation (NYSE: KEX  ) , which operates 30% of the coastal tank barges in the U.S. Oiltanking Partners (NYSE: OILT  ) , which has storage capacity of 12.1 million barrels and six deepwater docks on the Houston Ship Channel Martin Midstream Partners (NASDAQ: MMLP  ) , which operates a large fleet of inland barges and controls 31 marine terminals

These companies won't be the only winners, but they are a good place to start your research.
