5 Best Consumer Stocks To Invest In Right Now

The Oracle of Omaha has done it again -- though Warren Buffett wasn't able to best the stellar returns of the Standard & Poor's 500 in 2013.

Berkshire Hathaway, the investing conglomerate billionaire Buffett chairs, posted a record profit last year of $19.5 billion, the company said in its annual report released Saturday. Analysts had estimated earnings would be $18 billion.

In 2012, its net income was $14.8 billion.

Analysts said Berkshire's solid 2013 performance can be credited to improved economic growth since so many of his holdings are well-known consumer goods and services that do well when the economy is going strong.

The per-share book value of its class A and class B stock rose by 18.2% in 2013, said Buffett in his annual letter to shareholders.

The S&P had returns of about 30% last year.

Jonathan Leibson/PMC/Getty Images SodaStream (SODA) has been one of Wall Street's bigger disappointments over the past year, but shareholders may finally be catching a break. Sources were telling several different international publications last week that the company behind the namesake carbonated beverage maker is in talks to be acquired for at least $40 a share. The buyout would come as a welcome relief for investors who have seen the stock fall from its sudsy peak of $77.80 last summer to below $30 this summer. Inventory woes and cascading margins have slammed SodaStream, and investors know that soda is no good when the fizz is gone. Bottling Up Optimism Buyout chatter heated up last week when Israeli business publication The Marker reported that a British investor was in negotiations to acquire SodaStream in an $840 million deal that would swap common stock for $40 a share in cash. It seemed like just the latest in a long line of empty acquisitive talk, but then things began heating up in the U.K. media channels. The Independent reported that beer behemoths Diageo (DEO) and SABMiller (SBMRF) are considering an offer for SodaStream. The Times apparently has another source naming private equity firm KKR as an investor willing to shell out $46 a share for SodaStream. All of these conflicting rumors would seem to be turning this buyout symphony into a cacophony, and conspiracy theorists would argue that SodaStream itself could be behind this in an effort to smoke out a potential suitor. However, you don't often see three different international publications talking up SodaStream as a purchase. Pop a Cap Off We've been here before. It was originally Israel's Calcalist reporting last summer that PepsiCo (PEP) had the hots for SodaStream. Canned and bottled soda sales have been sluggish. Moody's Investors Service is reporting that carbonated soft drink sales declined 2.6 percent in the U.S. last year, with an even larger drop in diet sodas. Diversifying int

Truth be told, were it just today's 11% pop from American Lorain Corporation (NYSEMKT:ALN), it might not even be worth mentioning. It's not just today's 11% rally from ALN, though, that's made this stock so interesting. It's everything that's happened up until this point that may mean American Lorain deserves a spot at the top of your watchlist, if not in your portfolio.

Shares of Under Armour (UA) have surged to an all-time high after releasing earnings today. Were they really that good? (If that question sounds familiar, it should.)

Citigroup’s Kate McShane and Corinna Van der Ghinst think they were:

The impressive top-line growth was driven by apparel up +35.4% (from category expansion in women, golf, outdoor, etc.), footwear +34% (on new running launches), & accessories +17.5%. Gross margins expanded +90bps y/y to 49.2% (vs. guidance of flat & our +10bps est.) on better product margins & mix shift…

Mgmt noted increased confidence for the balance of the year based on stronger execution & visibility in 1H, with new team sponsorships, ongoing int growth (Brazil sales launched in Q2), Under Armour first women brand holiday in Q3, & growth in the digital fitness platform.

Shares of Under Armour have gained 15% to $69.64 at 11:47 a.m., and I’m guessing its big beat has something to do with the gains in other athletic-apparel companies like Nike (NKE) and Lululemon (LULU) today as well. Shares of Nike have risen 1.6% to $78.61, while Lululemon is up 3.8% at $38.97.
