With shares of Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) trading around $403, is AMZN an OUTPERFORM, WAIT AND SEE, or STAY AWAY? Let analyze the stock with the relevant sections of our CHEAT SHEET investing framework:

Amazon serves its customers through its retail websites and focus on selection, price, and convenience. The company also manufactures and sells Kindle devices. Amazon offers programs that enable sellers to sell their products on the company websites, including the sellersown branded websites, and fulfill orders through them. Amazon also provides platforms that allow authors, musicians, filmmakers, app developers, and others to publish and sell content. Online commerce has been on the rise because of the convenience, efficiency, and relatively low prices offered.

In the retail world, Mike Duke isn this year Santa Claus, nor is Gregg Steinhafel. Rather, the red suit belongs to Amazon very own Jeff Bezos, and it is all thanks to his little elves at the company toy factories. The holiday shopping season has always been a retail gold mine for big-name companies like Wal-Mart Stores (NYSE:WMT) and Target (NYSE:TGT), but this year, the competition has been especially fierce because the brick-and-mortar retailers are suffering struggling sales on account of new competition presented by e-commerce giants like Amazon.Wal-Mart and Target have worked to combat this new rival by shoring up their Internet offerings and marketing enticing online deals, but a new report from Bloomberg shows that despite their best efforts, it still isn enough, because Amazon has a more impressive online availability of toys than Wal-Mart or Target do.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Geoff Gannon] ng>Micropac

Micropac is 76% owned by Heinz-Werner Hempel. He a German businessman. You can see the German company he founded here. He had control of Micropac for a long-time. I don have an exact number in front of me. But I would guess it been something like 25 years.

    ADDvantage

ADDvantage Technologies is controlled by the Chymiak brothers. See the company April 4 press release explaining their decision to turn over the CEO position to an outsider. Regardless, the Chymiaks still control 47% of the company. Ken Chymiak is now chairman. And David Chymiak is still a director and now the company chief technology officer. Clearly, it still their company.

By the way, the name ADDvantage Technologies has nothing to do with the Chymiaks. Today AEY really traces its roots to a private company called Tulsat. The Chymiak brothers acquired that company about 27 years ago. So, effectively, when you buy shares of AEY you are buying into a 27-year-old family-controlled company.

That pretty typical in the world of net-nets.

    Solitron

Solitron Devices is 29% owned by Shevach Saraf. He has been the CEO for 20 years. The post-bankruptcy Solitron has never known another CEO. Before the bankruptcy, Solitron was a much bigger, much different company. So even though we are not talking about the founder here and even though 70% of the company shares are not held by the CEO wee still talking about a company where one person has a lot of control. Solitron only has three directors. Saraf is the chairman, CEO, president, CFO and treasurer. Neither of the other two directors joined the board within the last 15 years. So, we aren talking about a lot of tumult at the top.

In fact, profitable net-nets seem to be especially common candidates for abandoning the responsibilities of a public company without actually getting taken private.

Investors are eying big gains in Regeneron Pharmaceuticals (REGN) following its earnings release today, which featured good news on the biotech company’s blockbuster-to-be, Eylea.

    Getty Images

Reuters has the details on Regeneron’s results:

Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc forecast U.S. sales of eye drug Eylea to reach $1.7-$1.8 billion in 2014 as it expects the drug to win approval for newer uses, sending its shares up 3 percent before the opening bell.

Regeneron, whose stock has been propelled by the success of Eylea, said U.S. sales of the sight-saving drug rose 46 percent to $402 million in the fourth quarter. The drug’s international sales touched $184 million in the quarter…

The company’s net income fell to $97 million, or 86 cents per share, in the quarter ended December 31, from $470 million, or $4.08 per share, a year earlier. The year-ago quarter included a non-cash tax benefit of $336 million.

Analysts had expected a profit of 98 cents per share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

RBC Capital Market’s Adnan Butt and team note that Eylea sales could be better than management forecasts:

The trend shows growth over 4Q run-rate and is deemed a positive as management is typically viewed as conservative when it comes to guidance. Questions on the call will focus on what is included, i.e., whether it includes DME or not which is not yet approved. We like [Regeneron] for the blockbuster potential of Eylea and the deep pipeline and are buyers, especially on any pullbacks. It is one of our top ideas for 2014.

Brean Capital’s Jonathan Aschoff and Yi Cheng raise their target price on Regeneron to $380 from $367. They explain why:

4Q13, U.S. Eylea sales were hurt by the holiday season but helped by an increase in inventory held by distributors to over two weeks, which should negatively affect sequential Eylea sales in 1Q14. In 4Q13, Eylea had 50% of the U.S

    Flotek Industries (NYSE: FTK  )
I've mentioned Flotek Industries to Fools in the past. The relatively small ($940 million capitalization and growing) company provides a range of products and assistance for oil and gas operations, from well construction to production. It's also the only services company -- and one of but a handful of companies in any sector -- that's been accorded a perfect consensus of one (strong buy) by the analysts.

  • [By David Smith]

    Flotek Industries (NYSE: FTK  )
The smallest member of the trio, with a market cap of about $815 million, Flotek operates on the services side of the energy sector. As I've previously pointed out to Fools, it also constitutes a rare instance wherein the analysts who monitor the company all accord it strong buy ratings. But with Flotek's share price having risen by more than 40% year to date, it is difficult to contest that unanimous confidence.
