The big sell-off, which followed a decent March employment report that suggested the job market would rebound with the spring thaw, prompted fresh talk on Wall Street of whether the long-awaited price correction is underway.
Many of the stocks that were super-hot and super-popular got hit hard again, including Facebook (-4.6%), electric-car maker Tesla (-5.9%) and whiz-bang biotech names with promising drug pipelines. These "story stocks," which have gotten pricey, have suddenly run into a wave of selling by investors opting to lock in profits after big run-ups. Many investors are now searching for stocks sporting better values.

Here’s a look at three application software companies currently on a 52-week low and still held by a few billionaires. The9 Ltd. (NCTY), Merge Healthcare Inc. (MRGE) and FAB Universal Corp. (FU) are more than 52% off a 52-week high.

Another stock that's starting to move within range of triggering a breakout trade is Merge Healthcare (MRGE), which develops software solutions that facilitate the sharing of images to create a more effective and efficient electronic health care experience for patients and physicians. This stock hasn't done much in 2013, with shares up just over 8% so far.
If you take a look at the chart for Merge Healthcare, you'll notice that this stock has been trending sideways since it gapped down in August, with shares moving between $2.35 on the downside and $2.98 on the upside. Shares of MRGE are now starting to trend back above its 50-day moving average of $2.65 a share. That move is quickly pushing the stock within range of triggering a big breakout trade above the upper end of its sideways trading chart pattern.
Market players should now look for long-biased trades in MRGE if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $2.82 to $2.98 a share, and then once it takes out its 200-day moving average at $3.08 and its gap down day high of $3.20 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action o 793,997 shares. If we get that move soon, then MRGE will set up to re-fill some of its previous gap down zone from August that started at $4.60 a share.
Traders can look to buy MRGE off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support levels at $2.55 to $2.54 a share, or below that recent low of $2.35 a share. One can also buy MRGE off strength once it clears those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

To use a recent REIT example, take CommonWealth REIT. This is a large well established REIT that is valued in the market with one of the lowest multiples of FFO in the industry. The reason the company trades at a multiple roughly half its competitors, in my opinion, is the poorly aligned management incentive structure. The management of CommonWealth is contracted to an external management firm, Reit Management Research (RMR). Many of the trustees of CommonWeath are owners of RMR and serve on both boards. RMR is primarily compensated by growing CWH's assets which are under RMR's management, not on stock price, FFO, or anything else that is closely aligned to generating shareholder returns. This has the perverse effect of motivating them to issue lots of equity and buy lots of buildings irrespective of the value add to CommonWealth shareholders. Neither the management company nor its employees have a significant amount of their income based on the performance of CommonWealth's stock price. This has resulted in an activist, Corvex Capital, buying a significant position in the company and taking action to replace the board and the management team. The proxy advisory firm, ISS, has sided with the activist and recommended that shareholders vote out the current trustees. ISS notes, "Between 2007-2012 …while the CommonWealth management team increased assets by 198% of period-ending market cap - driving a significant increase in fees payable to management - Commonwealth's share price - the measure of value appreciation for shareholders - fell by 68%." This is the poster child of misaligned management incentives.

Today I'm looking at one of the world's largest mining companies,Rio Tinto (LSE: RIO ) (NYSE: RIO ) , to determine whether the shares are still safe to buy at 2,880 pence.
- [By Ben Levisohn]
A little good news out of China goes a long way for mining stocks like Rio Tinto (RIO) and BHP Billiton (BHP) as well as mining-machinery companies like Caterpillar (CAT) and Joy Global (JOY).
Rio TintoThe Lindsey Group’s Peter Boockvar explains the news out of China:
China slight improvement in their main manufacturing PMI to 50.8 from 50.4 for May just puts it back to its 2013 average of 50.8 but as we all fear a pronounced China slowdown, the markets are taking the news positively. Export orders and employment remained below 50 but new orders rose to a 6 month high. China has taken some modest stimulus steps and are now afraid of slowing the property market too much as housing restrictions have been eased and selective reserve requirement ratios have been lowered. China markets were closed overnight but copper is up by almost 1.5%.
Shares of BHP Billiton have risen 0.5% to $68.19 at 2:18 p.m. today, while Rio Tinto has climbed 1.8% to $52.32 and Caterpillar has advanced 1.4% to $103.64. And Joy Global? It’s up 1.8% at $57.98 despite the it will release financial results on June 5. Barclays’Andy Kaplowitz and team are cautious about Joy Global’s chances but expect to see signs of improvement:
While JOY results should improve sequentially, we think JOY overall outlook is likely to remain fairly cautious given global mining machinery end markets that remain in a bottoming process. We do anticipate some sequential improvement in both top line and earnings given typical seasonal improvement in JOY F2Q and the company cost cutting efforts; however, given relatively low backlog of ~$1.5bn entering the quarter, we think sequential revenue growth is likely to be more muted than in recent years (we model revenue of $900mn, +7% q/q and -34% y/y). That said, we think operating margin could improve meaningfully vs. F1Q, supported by some better overhead absorption as well as the realization

The broader comments are a boon for the industry, explaining why competitors like Avalon Rare Metals (NYSEMKT: AVL ) traded up nearly 10% and Rare Earth Elements (NYSEMKT: REE ) surged over 12% on the news. If industrial demand for rare-earth elements is stabilizing and beginning to build, then all three of these companies will benefit. High inventories in the hands of customers have been a major drag on prices for an extended period, and If this trend is reversing, Molycorp should see continuing strength in the later part of the year.

One under-$10 rare earth metals player that's trending very close to triggering a major breakout trade is Avalon Rare Metals (AVL), which is a Canadian mineral exploration and development stage company with its focus on the rare metals and minerals. This stock has been hit hard by the bears so far in 2013, with shares off by 40%.
If you take a look at the chart for Avalon Rare Metals, you'll notice that this stock recently pulled back after a monster run to the upside, with shares selling off from its high of 90 cents to its low of 71 cents per share. Shares of AVL are now starting to bounce off that low and trend back above its 50-day moving average at 74 cents per share. That move is quickly pushing this stock within range of triggering a major breakout trade above a key descending trendline and above some near-term overhead resistance levels.
Traders should now look for long-biased trades in AVL if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at 82 to 90 cents per share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 447,084 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then AVL will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $1.14 to $1.22 a share. Any high-volume move above those levels will then put its next major overhead resistance levels at 41.34 to $1.64 within range for shares of AVL.
Traders can look to buy AVL off weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support levels at 71 cents to 65 cents per share. One can also buy AVL off strength once it clears those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Back on September 24th I pointed out how Avalon Rare Metals Inc. (NYSEMKT:AVL) was a superior stock pick to Rare Element Resources Ltd (NYSEMKT:REE), even if only for short-term technical reasons. Either way, however, the rebound in the prices of most rare earth metals was going to be good for both REE and AVL. The one name conspicuously missing from the bunch, of course, was Molycorp Inc. (NYSE:MCP). Well, you can finally add MCP to the buy list as well. In fact, the different path it took to technical soundness may well make Molycorp the best pick of the bunch right now.

Rare Element Resources Ltd (NYSEMKT:REE) has been getting more than its fair share of attention of late.... bullish attention, to be precise. The stock's benefited from the attention too, with REE shares up 58% in the past two and a half weeks. As compelling as that move is, however, it's not the best rare earth bet at this point. If you like Rare Element Resources, you'll love Avalon Rare Metals Inc. (NYSEMKT:AVL). Unlike REE, AVL isn't already overbought. Indeed, it's just getting started.
First and foremost, it's worth noting that the undertow pushing Avalon Rare Metals and Rare Element Resources Ltd shares upward is doing the same for most rare earth metal miners. That undertow is simply a broad price improvement for rare earth elements. Since July's low, neodymium ("the biggie) prices have advanced from $75/kg to the current price of $103/kg, and are still going strong. Some observers have already suggested the proverbial bottom has been made, and their arguments actually hold up pretty well. That's why REE and AVL have been such - no pun intended - hot commodities of late... this rebound in rare element prices seems to be the real deal.
So what's wrong with Rare Element Resources Ltd that isn't wrong with Avalon Rare Metals? In simplest terms, AVL isn't overbought right now, while REE is.
With just a quick glance at the chart of Rare Element Resources Ltd we can see that shares had already been hot, gapping higher back on the 16th, yet never looking back. Now it's up huge, and on huge volume. In fact, today's big 11% pop will be the highest volume day we've seen in months.
On the surface it seems bullish, but this is one of those "too much of anything is still too much" situations. REE may be hot, but it's well overextended already, and today's extreme bullishness may be actually be a blowoff top.
AVL, on the flipside, isn't nearly as overextended right now. In fact, it appears to just be getting started. Though it to
